Jelly Beans Did you ever stop to think about jelly beans?  I mean, really think about jelly beans?  Like what purposes they can serve?  Well, there's the obvious, of course, which is that they can be eaten, and usually are.  They're tasty.  But it doesn't stop there.  You can line them up and make a train out of them.  Little kids do that all the time.  Usually they do it on a carpet and then eat the jelly beans, dust and all.  Yuk!  Adults are more likely to put jelly beans in a jar or a gold fish bowl and ask people to guess how many are there.  The winner gets something -- a car or a vacation or at least a bag of jelly beans.  But then there are more unusual uses.  I actually knew a guy once who stuck jelly beans in his ears for attention!  Not the new kind of jelly beans, not the little gourmet things you find in stores now.  No, he wanted big-time attention.  He used the old kind of jelly beans, the big ones that only came in a few colors (pink, white, and purple were the best, but red was okay, too).  He stuffed one in each ear and walked down a busy street, just hoping people would look at him.  Now that's weird ... and kind of pathetic.

I guess we all need attention sometimes, but just how far would you go?  Is it ever okay to be ridiculous?  Seems like the most desperate, outlandish attempts -- the lampshade on the head and similar things -- just make us feel like idiots after the fact, right?  And for what?  Usually not much.  Those antics tend to backfire.  But there are times that getting attention is really important, and it's even worth looking like an idiot to get it.  What about when you want to be identified with your group, whatever that is, and to be able to find your fellow members quickly? Worth wearing that bright red T-shirt with the stupid picture on it, right?  Or what if you want to draw attention to your favorite team?  Or a worthy cause?  Or a special going on in your business?  Worth looking a little silly?  You betcha!  Well, maybe not jelly beans in the ears, but how about this instead? Got your attention, didn't they?  And they're convenient and easy to carry and can say anything you want them to say.  Better than that, they stick up above the crowd so you can see them easily, and everyone else isn't wearing them (not yet, anyway).
